Can You Square Dance to Mozart?
From its early roots in country dance through the Urban Cowboy revival, square dance was synonymous with country music. Nowadays we dance to almost every genre of music there is. Western Star Dancers Caller Rich Reel regularly auditions new pieces, keeping his presentation fresh, but he mixes in old favorites, too.
Russ King, new WSD Administrator, discussed music, dance, and choreography back in 1991 for an edition of WSD’s Quartery Selections. When it was originally written gay square dancing was in its boot-and-levis stage. Variety had not yet bloomed in square dance music. And there still is no Scottish dance group.

Square Dance Story
Ferris Wheeler, a dancer with the San Loco Crazy 8s, met Biff Flikiker, a Korean martial arts enthusiast, during a street fair where the Crazy 8s were recruiting for their new class. It wasn’t quite love at first sight, but after their first tip together, they were almost inseparable. Biff enjoyed the square dance club for the social aspects; he felt at home with the dancers and found the activity fun, but it wasn’t as physically intense as his martial arts. Ferris started practicing the beginning martial arts with Biff, but thought that the concentration required to be a strain to maintain, not to mention the amount of intense exercise (Ferris isn’t as young, or thin, as he used to be). Rather than each going his own way, for they were madly in love and the sex was tremendous, Ferris and Biff have found a way to combine their second and third favorite activities (you can imagine what their favorite activity might be). Classes start next Wednesday for their new program of Taekwondo-si-do.
